1. Define Your Machining Task Before Choosing a Machine

The most common mistake is buying a cheap machine first and figuring out jobs later. The correct order: list your parts — material, tolerances, cycle time — then derive the machine spec.

  • Travel & fixturing: keep 15% margin on X/Y/Z travel
  • Accuracy class: positioning accuracy matters for molds; repeatability for volume parts
  • Torque & RPM: aluminum needs high RPM; hard materials need low-end torque

2. How to Allocate Budget

For a $40,000 machine, a sound split is roughly:

  2. Rigging, container, customs, inland transport: 15%

Putting everything into the machine body with nothing left for logistics and commissioning is the classic rookie failure.

3. Age vs. Running Hours

4. Brand and Service Radius

Ask yourself: who repairs this machine in your region?

  • FANUC / Mitsubishi / Siemens CNC: mature global service networks, boards and spares are easy to source
  • Niche or acquired brands: cheap, but a failure can mean months of waiting for parts
  • For exports, confirm local engineers in the destination country can service the control system

5. Inspection: The Cheapest, Most Valuable Step

No matter how trustworthy the seller, third-party or in-person inspection is not optional. Key checks:

  • Spindle radial runout and thermal drift
  • Guideway wear steps (indicator sweep across full travel)
  • Ballscrew backlash
  • Hydraulic/pneumatic leaks
  • CNC alarm history

6. Attachments Belong in the Contract

Tool magazines, chucks, steady rests, original tooling, manuals, wiring diagrams — these "loose assets" are the easiest things for a seller to quietly keep. List them item by item and photograph before container loading.

For exports, confirm:

  • Destination voltage system (220V/380V/415V/440V, 50/60Hz)
  • Whether the transformer ships with the machine
  • Local safety standards and certification requirements
